The History of Maroubra Fun Run

The inaugural Maroubra Fun Run took place in 1996, coinciding with the Centenary Boston Marathon, and was organized by the Maroubra and Districts Chamber of Commerce. Richard and Philip Walsh from Walsh’s Village Pharmacy were passionate runners who contributed significantly to the event’s energy and organization that year and have continued to do so every year since.

Initially attracting 190 participants and accompanied by a modest community fair, the event has now grown to over 1000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair participants annually, with an additional 5000+ attendees for Oktoberfest, making it one of the largest community events on the Maroubra calendar.

The start and finish line has consistently been at the South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club, and as the event flourished, it garnered support from various local organizations, including the South Maroubra Surf Club to help with set up and provide the traditional barbecue, and the Maroubra Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Maroubra for volunteers.

The name was originally The Rotary Club of Maroubra Fun Run and Oktoberfest, until The Juniors Group of Clubs taking over the naming rights with a generous financial contribution with the event now call The Juniors Maroubra Fun Run and Oktoberfest.

Numerous other local clubs and organizations have lent their support over the years, notably including the Randwick SES and Randwick City Council.
